From the website: “The Council of 101 of the Orlando Museum of Art presents the 26th annual Festival of Trees, “Once Upon A Time … A Fairy Tale Festival”, November 9th -18th , 2012. Each year the Council of 101 transforms the Orlando Museum of Art into a Holiday Wonderland. The Festival of Trees, our major fundraiser for the museum, brings thousands of people to the museum each year. Dozens of Central Florida Businesses and individual Designers sponsor trees and create decadent decorations and displays.

For this year’s theme, “Once Upon A Time…A Fairy Tale Festival”, designers will incorporate the whimsy and tradition of everyone’s favorite fairy tales, along with the latest design trends, as they trim their trees into amazing holiday creations.

Festival of Trees attendees can delight in some holiday shopping in areas such as The Enchanted Boutique, Deck the Halls: Fairy Tale Forest, Fairy Tale Toyland, Entertaining by Design, and Gingerbread Village.

My family has been in Orlando for almost 8 years now and we go to the Festival every year. And now that I have 2 small children, it has become a more magical experience. In my opinion, they have THE best Santa in the area. He looks like the old storybook Santa you envisioned as a child. He is polite and courteous to the kids and understands what the parents want. Yup. He knows how to work the camera. 

This year I was proud to donate a wreath and help support the community I live in, the industry I love so much and tell my kids that Santa is going to bring someone mommy’s wreath.

For the first time ever The Makeup Show landed in Orlando! I was thrilled to experience one of the largest beauty industry tradeshows in the country.

Our hosts James Vincent, Orlando Santiago and team out together and attention getting collection of classes, lectures and display booths from some of the most well known and need to be known companies in the business including, Makeup For Ever, Smashbox Cosmetics and Inglot.  Keynotes included “A Career in Makeup” with AJ Crimson and lectures hit hot topics like “Beauty and the Blog” which included my dear beauty bloggers, Let Them Have Polish, Clumps of Mascara and Phyrra.net.

There were product showcases by every brand. It felt like Moroccan bazaar of cosmetic hawkers! I was particularly taken b the gorgeous color pallets from Inglot and the 3d eye shadows from my new beauty Guru, Ofra Pro.

When speaking with James Vincent he stated that the TMS team works hard to tailor each show to the needs and resources of the area they are in. So a resounding round of applause for a job more than well done Mr. Vincent!

The show brought out many FL based companies and small businesses like Ofra Pro Cosmetics., and Loladé Cosmetics and women owned businesses like Magnolia Makeup and our friend Cult Nails.

The show is for industry pros and students alike and the vibe was electric. . I was educated about product, technique and business. I met students, pros and press.There were so many men and women in one space exuding such passion and love for their chosen industry. I was caught up in their fervor.

I have even more love and respect for those who help make us more beautiful, outside and in, and I’ll be bringing you more from the show including product reviews and pro interviews!

Hello all! Su Laing here. Last night I had the pleasure of spending the evening with some of my favorite beauty gals from the Beauty Bloggers of Central Florida group. The icing on this luscious cosmetic cake was that we were joined by James Vincent and Orlando Santiago, the creators of The Makeup Show and their Orlando team!

I’ll be sure to bring you the latest trends, products and beauty news from the show this weekend, but after a fantastic margarita at Café Tu-Tu Tango I was able to talk with James and Orlando and get their feelings about the Orlando show and the industry. (This is all paraphrasing and no direct quotes.)

I asked about the beauty industry moving to the forefront of culture instead of being on the heels of fashion. James spoke about the impact of social media and the effect of celebrities. If a movie star wears a particular lipstick shade to a red carpet event, the impact is instantaneous through the use of applications like TwitterInstagram and Facebook.

The beauty industry is constantly evolving. Where as the fashion industry tends to concentrate on 2 major release times a year, the beauty industry releases product and updates looks constantly and consistently. The use of social media serves to support and promote this.

Another area James highlighted was that beauty is often more achievable than fashion. It’s well documented that even in times of financial squeezing, the beauty and cosmetic industries are still profitable, James sighted that’s it’s more cost efficient to buy a new lipstick as opposed to a new dress.

He said that beauty is ageless, sexless….it doesn’t care about your weight or your size, and fashion does.

Orlando spoke reverently about color. Companies like Pantone and WGSN produce color palettes YEARS in advance. These are wonderful resources to explore and plan your own color pallets and looks even before the new fashions hit the runways. Orlando suggests you knock out your fear of color and experiment with mixing colors as opposed to buying an abundance of similar palettes. CREATE your look rather than just follow the trends.

Since The Makeup Show travels all over the world, I asked Orlando about some of the differences between the US and European shows.

Orlando offered that Europe seemed to be a bit more about taking beauty risks. He stated that in his opinion, London was edgy and bold, Paris was all about refinery and details and the US and NY in particular was about raw, natural beauty and exquisite contouring.

Both Orlando and James frequently touted the values of social media in giving the consumer immediate reference to trends, products, techniques and tips.

James said that over the 7 years since the creation of the makeup show, they have gone from knowing a handful of bloggers to inviting hundreds to each show, stating that bloggers can offer a variety of opinions and values.

Companies like my own Chronicle Stones and Nail VeilsCult Nails and Lipstick Mixtapes offer beauty from a professional perspective where as blogs such as Clumps of MascaraPhyrra.net and

Pretty Little Bottlesoffer review and event coverage from the consumer perspective. Both angles have their own values for both professionals and consumers alike.

Fashion, charity, Peroni and did I mention FASHION.  The entire week leading up to the Park Avenue Fashion week runway show boasts parties and trunk shows up and down the Avenue.   LUMA on park was turned into a fashion runway and late night hot spot for Peroni Italy’s “THE FASHION BLACKOUT”

Amy Runyan, owner of SKIN STUDIO, and Michelle Marks of “about town with Shel”, both representing the Orlando Fashion Society, were happy to attend and cover this event.  The $20 donation at the door went to the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Luma provided the amazing food, Peroni provided a complimentary cocktail, and there was even a photo booth to capture this “blackout” party.

Glitz, horns and a hard edge ruled the runway.  Models sported many looks but kept a party vibe throughout the show.

The show was produced by Fused Fashion and runway designs were samples from K. Hendrix fall collection.  Runway hair provided by Prive Salon with makeup artists Alan Almada, Kristin Nugent, Jennifer Nicole Beverly and Sheri Michelle Models for the evening were provided by Abfab Model Management.

Congratulations to all involved on a VERY successful event.

Orlando Fashion Society board members Michelle Marks and Amy Runyan attended Fashion For Feathers on Monday October 15th held at Maxines on shine Benefiting the Pipiol Angels.

It’s such a pleasure to see FASHION behind a PASSION

Pipiol Angels help to provide learning supplies to children in need both locally and internationally. The Pipiol Angels’ mission is to mentor, to inspire, to develop hope and to create opportunities for the young people to achieve excellence and to become productive citizens. This mission is fulfilled by planning, organizing and hosting community events, and by providing training and education to the youths.
